• STARS Grant

    Sustainable, Targeted and Appropriate Reading Strategies

     

  • The STARS Grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Karnes City ISD was awarded this 2-year grant for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. Components of the STARS Grant include:

     

    • Book Distribution Program

      • Each KCISD student grades Pre-K to 5th receives a free, age appropriate book each month to take home

        • Encourages reading at home with parents or other family memebers

    • Reach Out and Read

      • Partnership with local doctors to provide free, age appropriate books to area children 4 years of age and younger

        • Encourages parents/family members to start reading to children at a young age

    • Extended Library Hours

      • KCISD school libraries are open extra hours before and after school to provide students, teachers and parents access to books and computers beyond the normal school day

    • Technology

      • 25 Chromebooks for each grade level Pre-K through 12

    • Professional Development

      • Provides training on new resources available to teachers

    • Library Resources

      • Access to online resources

        • TexQuest- digital resources including eBooks, Encyclopedias, magazine and newspaper articles, and much more

        • Tumble Book Library- eBooks for grades K-6th; animated picture books, talking picture books, chapter books and videos

        • Tumble Book Cloud- eBooks for Middle and High School students; graphic novels, classic literature, audio feature and videos

      • Additional books and magazines for each campus library collection
